Pink Taffeta + #STBS Link-up

by The Surprise Beginning on October 20, 2012

When you think about taffeta are you instantly transported back to your high school formal? {Or, if you are like me, maybe just transported to a memory of watching a classic, 80′s, John Hughes movie?}

Taffeta has been used over the years to make many a meringue shaped frock.

I’m sure at the time the women wearing them thought, “Wow, I look super hot right now. Go me.” Or similar. But that doesn’t mean that those dresses aged very well. When I am thrifting I don’t often get sidetracked by the many ball gowns, once loved, relegated to the charity bin.

You know what I mean don’t you?

Fashion, she is such a fickle mistress.

I know that when I look at a a piece of fabric, and please sense the sarcastic tone here, I often think “Hmm, how could I improve this?  . . . Of course – puff sleeves!”

All jokes aside though, I’m sure my kids will be looking at my formal photos one day, wondering what all of the black velvet was about {it was a bit of a black and white year so I just went with the black as it’s so much more my colour}.

How gorgeous were/are some of my high school besties?!!! Almost 10 years ago – insane!

When trends insist that something is fashionable we follow, but taffeta has, in my mind, become quite the untrustworthy fabric.

However, when I spotted this bright pink spotted fabric at Spotlight {deliberately using the word spotted here as much as I possibly can} marked down and within my reach today, well I had to have it.

I couldn’t leave it all alone on that bolt – it had to come home with me.

Now please ignore my iPhones extremely awesome photo taking capabilities {blame the phone, not the person holding it right?} – I assure you this fabric is actually pink.

I know that when I sew this up, and it’s going to be a dress just for your information, I may well be running the risk of being mistaken for some crazed lady-bug impersonator. But I don’t care.

I have been bewitched by the rustle of taffeta and the pure awesomeness of spots. Bewitched I tell you. Some tulle may even make an appearance. This is how serious the situation is.

When I have finished the dress I promise to show you, even if it is a complete disaster,

Now please do tell: Did you ever dress as a meringue? Are you currently indignant at me for suggesting all taffeta dresses date badly? I would love for you to send me a photo of you in a taffeta gown – oh I really would!

I was less Molly Ringwald and more of an Ally Sheedy in the 80s, so thankfully I dodged the taffeta. Or perhaps I simply suppressed the memories and shredded the evidence?

Go for the tulle, Hell Bunny style ;)

I think you should do the ‘Stepford Wives’ tight sleeveless bodice and full skirt….with the tulle of course!

The year was 1988 and I wore an emerald green taffeta number to my high school formal. Unfortunately I dont have pictorial evidence so you have to take my word for it – I was stunning! Team your pink spotted taffeta and tulle skirt with ripped fishnets and doc martens to unleash your inner Avril Lavigne.
