The Blogger Vs. the Teenager

As I write this I have a, hmm how to describe him, sceptical teenager looking over my shoulder asking me if I’m “blogging” again – seriously he included air quotes.

Well yes I am, I showed him my website and he still seems to think its some kind of a joke.

He is not a bad kid at all, he thinks I’m pretty awesome actually {I tend to have that effect on people, hehehe}, but there is something about society that seems to feel the need to belittle blogging and bloggers.

This is not a new thing, it is not a surprise, but there is a difference between “real” journalists putting down bloggers, and some of the amazing writing that happens on their blogs, and some random teenager believing that blogs can contain nothing of interest or use.

Why do they feel like it is okay to do this?

Has the media sullied our reputations so extensively that even teenagers can’t understand the allure of a blog?

Some journalists seem to believe that because they have been employed and educated in the area of writing this automatically makes them better and more deserving of a decent readership. Oh, how they like to write {and tweet} about it.

To the random ignorant people out there that feel blogs and blogging is a waste of time, I ask without expectation of reply, how do you figure?

Whether you write on a blog or for a “legitimate” publication you have just as many opportunities to inform, move and encourage those that read it.

The writing on a blog can be more intense, more true to life because it has the benefit of raw emotion, it has the ability to speak volumes louder than an editor might ever let a journalist.

A blog allows the publisher to grow and enrich their life through the sharing of their innermost thoughts. It takes courage to put yourself on display so completely.

So why the blog bashing seventeen year old boy {and any others who may feel the need to belittle a blogger}?

How can we help those in the dark understand the importance of a blog?
